Forced to live like the barbarians for 8 hours!

It is amazing how much we rely upon electricity in this day and age. For example, last night the power went out in my entire neighborhood, and much of the city of Savannah, at 10:30 pm.

It didn't come back on until 7 am or so the next morning. So what does one *do* without electricity?

I went outside to see what the devil was going on, and saw then that the lights were out across the entire neighborhood. It wasn't raining, but the winds were gusting fiercely and the sky was alight with pulses of heat-lightning.

It was an eerie tableau to watch; the lightning cast flashes across the night sky, yet there was no thunder to follow. It was like a silent 4th of July fireworks show.

My wife came out and joined me as I stood out on the driveway, and we watched the lightning show for a little while. We assumed that the power would return quickly, but ten minutes turned into twenty, then thirty.

Locking the door behind us, Sarah and I decided to go for a walk around the neighborhood. After all, it was less dark outside with all the lightning then it was inside. So we went for a walk, amusing ourselves by observing how all the neighbors were coping.

Many were sitting in their cars with the lights on, while others had brought out Coleman lanterns. One neighbor even had a fire going in a hastily-erected pit of stones on their driveway!

The winds were beginning to pick up fiercely, and we could see the trees themselves bending. It was becoming harder for Sarah to walk against the wind, since she is so small! So after going around the block one we went back inside.

Sarah decided to take advantage of the fact that our laptop still had some charge left on the battery, so she played some Neverwinter Nights until the battery fizzled out.

Needless to say I did not get any work done yesterday evening on my Passport to Wealth business. I was very glad when the power switched back on this morning.

So, how did people ever get by WITHOUT electricity??
